National Association of Home Builders named Bangor as one of twelve metro areas showing sustained economic recovery.

BANGOR, MAINE

Surprisingly Metro. Refreshingly Real.

Transportation

Highways

Bangor enjoys excellent access to New England and U.S. markets via the I-95 road connection to the U.S. interstate highway system, the major north-south corridor on the East Coast.  Maine Route 2 is the major east-west highway which intersects with Interstate 95 in Bangor.  I-395 provides a quick access to State Route 1-A, which connects to the Maine Coast. Virtually any location in Bangor is only ten minutes away. If you are tired of long commutes, gridlock, and traffic frustration, Bangor’s the place to be.

Maine has more than 7,000 licensed carriers to provide interstate overland service to points in New England and the Atlantic seaboard and more than 450 trucking firms to provide service within the State of Maine. Maine does not engage in economic regulation of the trucking industry.

Rail

The Bangor area serves as a junction point for the two rail systems that service the northern and central part of the state, the Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway and Springfield Terminal Railway/Guilford Transportation. Eastern Maine Railway Company operates a third rail system in the area, one that runs east-west through the northern part of the state.

Sea

Mack Point Cargo Terminal

Maine has three major sea ports – Portland, Searsport and Eastport – with freight rail and highway connections. These ports are open year-round, are ice-free, and have deep-water channels and berthing.

Within 30 miles of Bangor are three ports, Searsport, Bucksport and Bangor, that transport commodities swiftly and safely to points across the United States and Canada via a cohesive intermodal transportation system. These ports also offer the shortest routes for European-bound cargo. Eastern Maine is proud of the new Estes Point deep-water seaport in Eastport. This port is the deepest port on the Eastern Seaboard.

Port of Searsport – Mack Point Marine Intermodal Cargo Terminal: Searsport is located at the heart of Penobscot Bay.  As a result of a public/private partnership with Sprague Energy, the port has recently undergone a $20 million reconstruction effort resulting in a new terminal positioning it to effectively serve the needs of shippers moving product both into and out of Maine, and through the onsite rail yard of the Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway.  There is a federal navigation channel providing -35 ft. at MLW. The terminal has two berths and a 100’ by 560’ working surface.

Port of Bangor: Located near the head of tide of the Penobscot River, much of the home heating oil and petroleum distillate products for northern Maine ship through the terminals in the Bangor area. There is a federal navigation channel to Bangor providing -15 ft. at MLW.

The Bangor landing offers two public docks along with in-river moorings, access to vessels with vertical clearance of up to 79 feet and a 225 foot, ADA compliant, heavy vessel docking facility. Bangor also attracts pleasure boating to the area during the summers. Water and power are available, as are pump-out services.

Port of Bucksport: Bucksport is located mid-way up the Penobscot River between Searsport and Bangor. The harbor serves the needs of ocean going tankers, fuel barges, and recreational boating interests. The approach to Bucksport offers -29 ft. at MLW. The fuel pier at Bucksport is 900 feet long with a berthing capacity of 700 feet. Access is by State Route 15, and rail service is available from Maine Central Railroad/Springfield Terminal. Vessels transiting to Bucksport and points north must pass beneath the Verona Island Bridge which has an air draft or 135 feet at MHW.
